windows dvd maker error message:

the file is not indexed and cannot be imported

Windows Media Editor!!

first try....
In 'Windows Media File Editor'....
Open your file, select 'Mark in' at the beginning of the video, play the video thru and 'Mark out' at the end. Then 'Save as'. See if that works. That might force the editor to recognize the file.

If that doesn't work try...
In 'Windows Media Encoder'...
Open Encoder, select 'Convert a file', 'OK'...
Browse to your source file...
Browse to your output file loc and type a name...
Select 'File archive'...
Leave encoding quality at highest(VBR100), select 'Finish'

Also FYI:

To tell if its copy protected:

1. Open Windows Media Player (WMP) and drag and drop the file on the WMP window
2. Click on the "Library" tab at the top of the Windows Media Player window
3. The file name along with selected properties of the file will be displayed in the center area of the Library pane - one of the file property categories is "Protected" - there will be a Yes in this column for any file that is copy protected. If you right click on the file name and select "Properties" on the pop-up menu that appears, this will open a window with more details on the file to include info on the licenses for that file.
